Greetings everyone! I hope this week’s post finds all of you well. If you celebrated the American thanksgiving holiday, I hope it was a pleasant day for all. Winter is making its presence known across much of North America. A recent record breaking snowstorm in New York state is one example. Therefore, I’ll continue posting winter weather safety information this week with helpful tips on understanding winter weather forecasts and preparing an emergency kit that will be useful in any winter storm or severe weather scenario. The COP27 climate summit has come to a conclusion. Here’s a concise summary of the good and not so good results.
No doubt, this was the topic of conversation around many dinner tables during the American Thanksgiving holiday with not a little consternation in the air. Fortunately, for those that deny sound science, there are ways to understand their behavior and, perhaps, encourage them to understand the basis behind established facts and data.
There are many variables and metrics to consider when evaluating climate change and extreme weather events. Aerosols are one variable that we can’t afford to leave out due to the major role they play in air quality and regional extreme weather events.
According to a Stockholm University study, much of continental Europe is, on average, warming at twice the rate of the rest of the Earth.
As Europe goes, so goes the UK with a ‘second spring’ now becoming common with plants that normally would be dormant this time of year now springing back to life.
If the plant is warming, it would make sense that snowfalls would decrease in amounts and intensity. In fact, the opposite is true.

Hurricane Nicole, the first November hurricane to make landfall in the USA in over forty years is proof positive that events can still occur well into the autumn. Therefore, I’ll continue sharing helpful information on preparing an emergency kit that will be helpful in a hurricane, severe weather, or winter storm scenario. In the USA, autumn is no stranger to tornado activity as was proved by a localized outbreak on 4 November 2022 in parts of northeastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, and southwestern Arkansas. For the eastern Pacific and Atlantic, there are a few weeks left in the hurricane season. Therefore, I’ll continue sharing helpful information on preparing an emergency kit that will be helpful in any tropical storm or hurricane scenario. Greetings everyone! I hope this week’s post finds all of you doing well. The tropical Atlantic is certainly much busier than last week and the potential for a landfalling tropical cyclone is certainly a possibility. Consequently, I’ll continue to share helpful infographics on preparing an emergency kit that will be helpful in any tropical storm or hurricane scenario. As usual, there are many other essential and important reads to review on climate, weather, and other science related topics, so let’s get started.

Happy meteorological autumn to my friend and followers in the Northern Hemisphere! For folks south of the equator, welcome to meteorological spring!

The launch of the Artemis vehicle may have had another delay due to fueling issues, but weather can also sideline a launch. Why is weather so important to a rocket launch?
Here’s some very good news on the renewables front. “US to see renewable energy boom in wake of historic climate bill.”
Public policy is now key to badly needed adaptations if we are to get a handle on the climate crisis. “To adapt to climate impacts, come to grips with politics.” Good weather has held back USA climate action for decades.
“COP27 will be deadlocked if climate adaptation funding promise is broken.” A disastrous stalemate is likely unless low and middle income countries can trust promises made by richer nations.
“Why drought looks different depending on your region.” The USA’s Northeast’s ‘flash drought’ is a reminder that dryness isn’t just a problem for western states.
Hand in hand with drought is the scourge of heat waves. Heat is by far the deadliest weather hazard for the USA & many other countries. Often underrated, heat’s not called the ‘silent killer’ for nothing. Unfortunately, this weather and climate threat doesn’t garner the superfluous attention and hyperbole seen elsewhere in social media.

Greetings to everyone! I hope this week’s post finds all of you doing well. For much of the contiguous USA, a brutal heat wave that has turned lethal has many states in its grip. Because of this ongoing and very serious danger, we’ll continue this week with safety infographics on heat safety. There are many other essential reads to review, so let’s get started.

Let’s start off this week with the biggest science news in some time…the fantastic images from the James Webb telescope!
The COVID-19 pandemic rages on with a new variant that is the most contagious yet. Keeping track of the number of new cases is difficult especially with the proliferation of home test kits. Fortunately, there is a fantastically useful way of keeping track of the number of new cases…because ‘poop’ doesn’t lie.
For those of us awash in scientific research papers, this is an intriguing read. “How to find, read and organize papers.”
Daunting challenges getting from ‘summits to solutions’ amid increasing wild weather events. “Cop27 summit must focus on how world will adapt to climate change.”
Due to a changing climate and wildfires, recent research shows that much of California’s tree growth is dying and likely to not come back.
We often hear about “average” temperatures, precipitation, etc. with weather and climate…but what does “average” really mean?
June 2022 started off the meteorological summer in the USA with heat and drought. As of this post, the USA has already had nine billion dollar disasters…and we’ve yet to get into the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

SUMMER WEATHER SAFETY

Summer heat is one of the leading causes of weather related deaths and illnesses. Due to its slow yet potentially deadly ways in which is affects the human body, even the most physically fit individual who is well hydrated can succumb to heat exhaustion or heat stroke very quickly. As of mid July, over ten deaths have occurred in the USA due to individuals being left in vehicles. All of those fatalities were preventable. Summer heat is often called the ‘silent killer‘ and for good reason. Much of the contiguous USA is in the midst of a brutal heat wave with little to no relief in long range forecasts. Take the heat safety information below very seriously. It could save a life.
