Greetings to everyone! I hope this week’s post finds all of you doing well. We’ll continue sharing severe weather preparedness information this week with an infographic on flash flood safety that is applicable in both thunderstorms and tropical cyclones . There are several other interesting topics to review, so let’s get started.

A new search for life on Mars has begun with NASA’s Perseverance rover.
Who would have thought? “Car tires produce vastly more particle pollution than exhausts, tests show.”
This is an unfortunate example of misinformation, junk science, and climate change denialism blended together by nefarious interlopers and then integrated into a ‘culture war.‘
This was the the largest atmospheric explosion in recorded history. “Burst of underwater explosions powered Tonga volcano eruption.”
From Tampa, Florida to Alexandria, Egypt to Manila, Philippines, coastal cities round the world are slowly sinking.
NASA has plans to launch six satellites that will give meteorologists valuable data on forecasting tropical cyclones.
NOAA’s National Ocean Service has an excellent infographic and website on why our planet’s oceans are so important to our climate, economy, and survival as a species.

SEVERE WEATHER AND HURRICANE SAFETY

Whether it’s a thunderstorm, a tropical storm, or a hurricane, flash flooding presents a significant threat to life and property. Some years, flash flooding is the leading cause of weather related deaths. This infographic has some simple steps and a link for further information on staying safe when the waters begin to rapidly rise.

Please keep in mind that ONLY your local National Weather Service office, NOAA Weather Radio, or reliable broadcast media are the BEST sources of important, timely, and potentially life-saving, information on winter storm watches, warnings, and other related weather advisories! None of the links on this website should be used for life-&-death decisions or the protection of property!

Greetings to everyone! I hope everyone out there is faring well in this midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve plenty of interesting topics to cover this week. In atmospheric science, our changing climate is proving to be an obstacle in dealing with the pandemic and finding a long-term path of adaptation. The North American spring severe weather season is peaking and the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season is just days away. Well take a look at some severe weather safety information and much more with this week’s picks…so let’s get started.

For the first time in over a decade, American astronauts took to space in an American made rocket from American soil. The trampoline is working very well!
While on the topic of American spacecraft, we can look forward to many more in the next few years.

Satellites are an invaluable tool for a wide myriad of applications. In a few instances, they can get in the way of your view of some astronomical events.
Over the years, I”ve always enjoyed attending science conferences for various reasons. The COVID-19 pandemic will change how many of us convey knowledge and network with our peers.

In atmospheric science news, our changing climate is front and center and will be for many years as humanity grapples with the best path of adaptation. The coronavirus and Covid-19 situation is foremost on everyone’s mind with a world-wide pandemic that’s like nothing the world’s current population has ever seen. Additionally, the spring severe weather season is in full swing across the contiguous USA.. We’ve some tornado safety information and more with this week’s picks…so let’s get started.

If you’re interested in citizen science and are looking for projects in weather and climate, check out the mPING project and help National Severe Storms Laboratory scientists collect weather data. The CoCoRaHS project is a citizen science endeavor that is well established. I’ve been an observer for many years. Your daily reports of precipitation, or lack of, is very important to long-term climate data records. The apps for mPING and CoCoRaHS are free and available for both iOS and Android.
This is an excellent long-read that’s worth the time. “Why Weren’t We Ready For The Coronavirus?”
A fascinating astronomy read on our planet’s only local companion. “The moon is emitting carbon, raising questions about how it was formed.”
Microplastics are almost everywhere on our planet. Small and strange looking creatures in our oceans are even using them to make ‘shelters.’
Scientists and the general public have taken note of the startling drop in air pollution and urban noise during the ongoing pandemic. “Rather than let this time be forgotten, the United Nations and environmental campaigners are urging governments to “build back better, to invest in the future not the past”, to ensure that our global recovery has sustainable legacy.“

A new state of the art NASA satellite has taken a good look at Greenland and Antarctica. The data doesn’t lie. Both are losing billions of tons of ice into the ocean each year and that contributes significantly to global sea-level rise.
This new climate change study takes a look at how it affects the human habitat. “One billion people will live in insufferable heat within 50 years.”
One of the biggest earth science stories as of late has been the opening of the ozone hole over the North Pole. New data shows that after nearly a month, that hole has now closed.

SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS

Here’s a concise reminder on taking shelter during a tornado warning. Where you take shelter is quite often a matter of life and death or serious injury.

An emergency kit is also an essential part of severe weather preparedness. This handy checklist from the American Red Cross will help you get started. Since severe weather and other weather-related disasters can occur year round, it’s an excellent idea to have this at the ready regardless of where you live or the month/season.

Greetings once again to one and all! I hope your new year is off to a good start. The Australian brushfires that are unprecedented in every way have received a great deal of coverage. In atmospheric science news, our changing climate is front and center as we reach, by some accounts, a point of no return. Also, along with these posts will be the occasional winter weather safety link that I hope you’ll find helpful. On a more personal note, I appreciate the continued best wishes for a speedy recovery during my rehabilitation from prostate cancer surgery. On that note, let’s get started on this week’s reads.

The Australian brush fires have been getting a great deal of coverage that is well deserved for such a devastating event. Here’s a good read that’s a concise explanation of why these disastrous fires are taking place.
Sometimes, the powers that be can’t relate to the fear, despair, & painful loss of disaster victims. “Falling ash, skies of blood – and now Australia’s anger smoulders.”
Another major weather/climate disaster has been taking place in Indonesia. “Indonesia’s sinking capital of Jakarta and the surrounding areas have been inundated with rain, triggering landslides and floods that have killed dozens of people.”
When the facts you find make you itch, make up your own. “These Climate Science Deniers are Spreading Misinformation about the Australian Bushfires.”
Studying the climate of remote regions of the Earth can be exceptionally challenging. These new weather satellites are going to be spearheading a change for the better in data gathering.
Computer models are also invaluable in studying climate and climate change. Here’s an essential read on how the latest generation of climate models have been performing.
There are many changes we can make in our day-to-day living that will reduce our individual carbon footprint. Regardless, it still begs the very important question, “Could you live the 1.5° lifestyle?“
As of early January, parts of Scandinavia have seen winter temperatures in the mid 60’s. That’s nothing less than frightfully bizarre.
Speaking of January, skating on ice is often a common pastime in areas where long, deep cold is an annual event. However, extreme caution should be taken when on that ice. It may be much thinner, and more dangerous, than you think.
Finally, a basic but informative infographic on the science of wind chill. Ultimately, the wind chill should be more important to you than the actual air temperature. How your body reacts to cold air combined with wind can have substantial health and winter weather safety ramifications. For healthy people, wind chill may not be anything but uncomfortable. For others with pulmonary and/or cardiovascular health issues, the effects of wind chill can be substantial and even dangerous.
