This is easily one of the biggest science news stories in some time. “Black-hole image sheds light on Milky Way mysteries.”
This should be interesting to watch if they’re able to pull this off. “Florida Lab to Mimic Category 6 Hurricanes with 200-Mile-per-Hour Wind.“
Population centers and cities often take the brunt of poor air quality and air pollution. Here’s a look at the best and worst cities around the world in regards to air quality.
Here’s the latest and very comprehensive State Of The Climate report from the World Meteorological Organization. This is an essential ‘must read’ for anyone interested in the atmospheric sciences.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center and the National Weather Service have released their outlook for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. An above average season is contained in their findings and predictions.

While on the topic of hurricanes in the Atlantic, lets take a look at some recent data that shows the Gulf of Mexico is unusually warm for this early in the year. That is more fuel for the fire for what is predicted to be a very active Atlantic hurricane season.

The supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way galaxy is the biggest science news to come from astronomy in some time.
After 45 years, this was inevitable. “Voyager 1 glitch? Strange signals from probe has NASA baffled.“
Australia has some of the world’s oldest tropical rain forests. Climate change is decimating many of the irreplaceable trees.
Air pollution is responsible for up to 9 million deaths globally every year. This is one of the most underrated weather/climate hazards.
“Climate change swells odds of record India, Pakistan heatwaves.” Here’s the rub…if these kind of heat waves can occur in these countries, there’s no reason they can’t happen in Europe, South America, or North America.
Flash droughts are fast becoming a new normal, especially in Oklahoma.
The latest summer outlook for the contiguous USA doesn’t look good for folks like myself who are not fans of hot weather.

We’ll continue sharing severe weather preparedness information this week with an infographic on the difference between a watch and a warning. There are many other interesting topics to cover this week, so let’s get started.

Earthquakes are not limited to Earth. NASA’s InSight lander recently recorded the largest Martian earthquake yet.
The frequent dearth of earth science knowledge across society is one of the reasons that climate change and it’s ramifications are so frequently dismissed and misunderstood.
The new GOES-18 satellite is a boon to weather forecasting for the USA.
The earth is given 50-50 chance of hitting a key warming mark by 2026. This data is based on 11 different forecast centers predicting for the World Meteorological Organization.
There are many factors involved. “Why the 2022 Southwest Fire Season Is So Early & Intense.”
Heat is, by some metrics, the leading cause of weather related deaths worldwide. With that in mind, it’s often easy to forget that the human body can take only so much.
Here’s the latest NOAA report…this one for April 2022. With data going back to 1880, this past April set yet another record.
Having been involved in storm chasing and spotting since March, 1982, I can vouch for the sensationalist tone that has been pervasive in storm chasing for the last 20 – 25 years. I long for the days when ‘chaser convergence’ was a rare occurrence and hand analysis forecasting with sparse data was the norm. Sadly, recent years have seen the deaths of many storm chasers…and this is likely to happen again.

Let’s start off with a spectacular view. “A ‘galaxy’ is unmasked as a pulsar — the brightest outside the Milky Way.”
Here’s another interesting astronomy read with a trip to Mars and a look at how the Martian south pole was sculpted by carbon dioxide.
Unfortunately, this may become commonplace. With an ongoing drought and no relief in sight, some California residents are required to ration water.
A sobering read on the connection between climate change and viral outbreaks and the ramifications for public health.
Drought is one issue. Another important facet to consider is the amount of moisture transferred from land surfaces into our atmosphere.
Andover, Kansas was struck by a tornado on 29 April 2022. This spectacular surveillance camera view shows the tornado’s change in inflow winds & vortex structural changes including an amazing helical structure.

SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY

Flooding or flash flooding is one of the leading causes of weather related deaths in the USA with more annual deaths than tornadoes and hurricanes combined. Even the largest trucks with plenty of ground clearance can be swept away by modest flash floods.
