Greetings everybody! Thanks so much for visiting. Debby has been the big weather story across the eastern USA this week. A storm like this is a good example of why flooding is more dangerous that the wind in many tropical cyclones. While the Atlantic is quiet and preparedness supplies are plentiful, now is the time to get prepared for a tropical storm or hurricane. I’ve plenty of hurricane preparedness information for you. I’ll also continue our overview of summer heat safety. Along with the latest US Drought Monitor update there are several good reads, so let’s get started.

- The sight of a meteor is always spectacular, but why do some leave trails that can last almost an hour?
- Understanding how the ground beneath our feet changes and behaves is as important as understanding the life forms that fill our oceans or populate our land masses.
- The fact that microplastics are almost everywhere on our planet is not surprising. How these microplastics could affect public health is, in some circles, still up for debate.
- In the USA, a surprising number of people live without air conditioning. Many are living in apartments or rental properties. Considering how essential air conditioning has become, it’s important they have a way to stay cool in heat waves that often are lethal. Unfortunately, some landlords oppose the right to air conditioning.
- While on the topic of extreme heat, here’s an interesting read on how it affects the infrastructure that we all depend on.
- In recent months, the news making weather events haven’t been the ones responsible for the vast amount of storm damage across the USA.
- Buffalo, New York isn’t located in the traditional tornado alley, but that doesn’t mean it’s not vulnerable to tornadoes.
- Here’s the latest update on the US Drought Monitor. Drought conditions have worsened across the southern plains, the Mid Atlantic region, the Pacific northwest, and the northern Rockies. The latest fire weather outlooks can be found at the Storm Prediction Center website where they are updated daily.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

- Hurricane Beryl was a stark reminder that major hurricanes are not limited to the late summer or early autumn. Here’s a good primer to get you started on preparedness. It’s never too early to prepare for the storm you hope never happens!
- Here’s another comprehensive site that covers a myriad of topics that will be of interest to anyone living in an area prone to hurricanes and tropical cyclones.
- This is another good preparedness link that covers hurricanes, health concerns, and other natural disaster emergencies.
