Greetings to all and thanks for visiting. Hurricane Helene has left a path of death and destruction that hasn’t been seen in some time. A powerful typhoon has also made landfall in Taiwan this week. I’ve got a link on Helene, but this is a rapidly changing story as far as death tolls and the extent of damage. I’ve plenty of hurricane preparedness information for you since there are still several weeks left in the Atlantic hurricane season. Along with the latest US Drought Monitor update there are several good reads, so let’s get started.

- How much of an impact have humans had on global species extinction?
- A though provoking read on how preventing more climate change may be the better option than adaptation.
- Hurricane Helene has left a tremendous amount of damage and flooding in its path across the southeastern USA. As of this post, the death toll has passed 200. As is often the case in many major hurricanes with a high death toll, the fatalities that occur in the immediate wake of the storm are not the final death toll.
- Though far inland, some of the most devastating flood damage from Hurricane Helene occurred in Appalachia.
- This website will give you an idea of how many people in the path of Hurricane Helene are still without electricity.
- The places where people move to in order to escape unpleasant weather (subjectively speaking) will be changing and very soon.
- Thunderstorms have a wide variety of fascinating characteristics, but this one is not only newly discovered, but spectacular.
- Here’s the latest update on the US Drought Monitor. Drought conditions have worsened across much of the contiguous USA with little relief in sight for the near future. The latest fire weather outlooks can be found at the Storm Prediction Center website where they are updated daily.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

- Here’s a good primer to get you started on preparedness. It’s never too early to prepare for the storm you hope never happens!
- Here’s another comprehensive site that covers a myriad of topics that will be of interest to anyone living in an area prone to hurricanes and tropical cyclones.
- This is another good preparedness link that covers hurricanes, health concerns, and other natural disaster emergencies.

That’s a wrap for this week! Thanks for stopping by! See you next Saturday!
