Greetings to all and thanks for stopping by. Tornado Quest is now on Telegram. Scan the QR code above or check out the link below and follow along with some personal perspectives and the occasional thought provoking meme on a channel that will be selfie and food free. As for this week in science, it’s been another interesting and challenging week of many topics. Winter weather safety information will continue and I’ve got the latest US Drought Monitor update. Let’s get started.
- Let’s start off this week with a fascinating astronomy read about what is now considered the largest known object in the universe.
- Our planet is in a constant state of change and the Earth’s inner core is no exception.
- Let’s revisit this read from July, 2024. It even more relevant today than when it was first written. Many of you have heard of Project 2025 in the USA. This article from July 2024 highlights the dangers of this “project” to NOAA and the National Weather Service. Would you like a tornado or hurricane warning that could save your life? Then you’d better pay for it. The USA has been on the leading edge globally for weather data and forecasts for many, many decades. Under the current government regime, your National Weather Service office, the Storm Prediction Center, the National Hurricane Center, and other weather and climate based centers would be decimated and/or eliminated altogether.
- Speaking of dumpster fires, DOGE has now taken aim at NOAA and the National Weather Service. What transpires in the near future remains to be seen.
- The largest freshwater reservoir in the northern hemisphere is Greenland’s ice sheet. Here’s a disconcerting read on the rate at which it is melting.
- Have we reached the 1.5 C threshold? According to some new data, the answer may show we have.
- If the global temperatures continue to rise, the affects on humans would be far more than just an inconvenience.
- Perhaps the biggest climate news of the past week is the latest data showing that January 2025 was a very warm month around the globe and also had the lowest amount of Arctic sea ice.

- While on the topic of January, 2025, here’s a detailed look at sea ice loss during that month from the USA’s National Snow And Ice Data Center.
- Do the blue skies you see indicate that the air you breathe is healthy? Read on how that deceptive viewpoint can affect your friends, family, and you.
- Here’s the latest update on the US Drought Monitor. Drought conditions have largely held steady for the central and northern plains and the southeastern states of the contiguous USA. From southern Texas to southern California, extreme to exceptional drought conditions have worsened in the past week. The latest fire weather outlooks can be found at the Storm Prediction Center website where they are updated daily.

WINTER WEATHER SAFETY
Here’s more important winter weather safety information.
Here’s another good winter weather safety resource available in a 12 page PDF file.
