Greetings to all and thanks for stopping by. March is here and that means big weather changes. The severe weather season is well underway and that means an increase in tornado activity. Your tornado safety information will be a focal point this week. As usual, there are several thought provoking science reads along with our weekly US Drought Monitor, so let’s get started.
- Across much of the USA, we’ve gone into what is called “daylight saving time.” Why, in the 21st century, we’re still using this antiquated way of fooling ourselves into thinking there’s more daylight is beyond me. Not only is this dark ages thinking, but it costs our economy billions and is disruptive to school students.
- Putting sensors on tree leaves is just one way scientists are getting data on how some trees are able to cope with extreme heat.
- Were winters of just a few decades ago colder and snowier than today? Or, is it just the wistful memories some people have?
- Chances are, this read on air quality…as in the air that you breathe…has information that will affect your friends, family, and you.
- As the DOGE hooligans continue their nefariously reckless antics, some of the targeted employees at NOAA were responsible for collecting valuable data during events like Atlantic hurricanes. But hey, if these folks think that meteorologists are irrelevant and all you need to do is stick your head out the window to see if a hurricane or tornado is headed in your direction, then so be it. Right?
- This says it all. “The Defense Department has a new search-and-destroy mission. It’s on the hunt for climate-related programs and studies.”

- With the increase in severe weather and tornado activity across much of the USA, remember to check your NOAA weather radio’s operation and its batteries. NOAA has a comprehensive page on NOAA weather radio…a feature of the National weather Service in the USA that has saved countless lives.

- Here’s the latest update on the US Drought Monitor. Across much of the contiguous USA, drought conditions have continued to worsen during the past week. Most of the plains states, western Great Lakes region, and Carolinas and New England are seeing moderate to severe conditions. Extreme to exceptional drought conditions continue to worsen from Texas west to Nevada and California. The latest fire weather outlooks can be found at the Storm Prediction Center website where they are updated daily.
