Greetings to all and thanks for stopping by. The tornado and severe weather season is well underway with 2025 having already seen several substantial severe weather and tornado events. The bulk of the activity is yet to come. Your tornado safety information will be a focal point this week. As usual, there are several thought provoking science reads along with our weekly US Drought Monitor, so let’s get started.
- Check out this amazing image from the Hubble telescope of one of our neighbors!
- Speaking of amazing images, these ‘baby pictures’ of our universe are something else.
- Could our universe be trapped in a black hole? The James Webb telescope could help us with the answer.
- The dumpster fire continues in the USA with NOAA now announcing that it will cancel its monthly weather and climate update calls. Many researchers also fear for their safety regarding other topics that…shall not be mentioned.
- The proposed elimination of much of the USA’s EPA research and firings of hundreds of scientists would have far reaching reverberations that would last for many, many years. And YOU would pay the price.
- How does the research done by NOAA help with the weather forecasts that affect you? Read all about it.
- The debate on how AI can change weather forecasting has been going for some time. This read will show you why it just got more vigorous.
- If you never seen or heard of red sprites, you need to check this out. They’re one of the most fascinating, and mysterious, atmospheric phenomenons ever.
- Are you interested in collecting precipitation information for important weather databases? Become a citizen scientist and check out the CoCoRaHS project!
- What causes tornadoes? NOAA has a very concise yet thorough explanation for the non-scientist.
- With the increase in severe weather and tornado activity across much of the USA, remember to check your NOAA weather radio’s operation and its batteries. NOAA has a comprehensive page on NOAA weather radio…a feature of the National weather Service in the USA that has saved countless lives.

- Here’s the latest update on the US Drought Monitor. Across much of the contiguous USA, drought conditions have continued to worsen during the past week. Most of the plains states, western Great Lakes region, and Carolinas and New England are seeing moderate to severe conditions. Extreme to exceptional drought conditions continue to worsen from Texas west to Nevada and California. The latest fire weather outlooks can be found at the Storm Prediction Center website where they are updated daily.

Please note; Much of the preceding information may not be available/updated in the future due to unnecessary firings en masse at NOAA and the National Weather Service.
