Greetings everybody! Thanks so much for visiting. We’re reaching the peak season for hurricane potential and the Atlantic has a few areas of concern that are worth watching. While preparedness supplies are plentiful, now is the time to get prepared for a tropical storm or hurricane. I’ve plenty of hurricane preparedness information for you. I’ll also continue our overview of summer heat safety. With the arrival of September, meteorological autumn begins in the Northern Hemisphere, but that doesn’t mean the dangers of lingering heat go away. Nature doesn’t care how we fit the year into neat little boxes, change our clocks to fool ourselves into thinking we have more daylight hours, or use political geography to collect, analyze, and “control” nature and climate data. Along with the latest US Drought Monitor update there are several good reads, so let’s get started.

- Let’s start with an interesting read on the James Webb Space Telescope and a new finding about our universe.
- What was it like to be a dinosaur? What could their every day lives have been like?
- Can you guess what “critter” poses the most danger to humans? This read explores that nasty pest and why it’s vast presence is such a health hazard.
- In case you missed it, July 2024 was another record breaking month for heat. Here’s all of the details including a link from NOAA with further information.
- Let’s revisit this read from earlier this month on the challenges of facing the hazards of squall line tornadoes and how their behavior is often like a “smash and grab” thief in the night…sneaky and difficult to find.
- Here’s the latest update on the US Drought Monitor. Drought conditions have worsened across the southern plains, the Mid Atlantic region, the Pacific northwest, and the northern Rockies. The latest fire weather outlooks can be found at the Storm Prediction Center website where they are updated daily.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

- Here’s a good primer to get you started on preparedness. It’s never too early to prepare for the storm you hope never happens!
- Here’s another comprehensive site that covers a myriad of topics that will be of interest to anyone living in an area prone to hurricanes and tropical cyclones.
- This is another good preparedness link that covers hurricanes, health concerns, and other natural disaster emergencies.
