Greetings to all and thanks for stopping by. The tornado and severe weather season is well underway with 2025 having already seen several substantial severe weather and tornado events. The bulk of the activity is yet to come. Your tornado safety information will be posted again this week along with a reminder on lightning safety. As usual, there are several thought provoking science reads along with the updated US Drought Monitor, so let’s get started.
- Here’s an update with three important facets about the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar on March 28 that damaged both Myanmar and Thailand and resulted in thousands of fatalities.
- Why in the world are big banks concerned with our planet’s climate? Read why here.
- A very important satellite used to monitor the earth’s ozone layer is no more.
- Summer will be arriving in the northern hemisphere in a few short months. That also means the arrival of summer heat. How well do you think your body can tolerate the summer heat? You might think again.
- Speaking of your body, have you ever wondered why a 50 F (10 C) temperature in the spring feels different than one in the autumn?
- If you’re interested in weather, would like to contribute to valuable weather databases, and want to be a citizen scientist, check out the CoCoRaHS project! Your daily precipitation reports, even when no precipitation has occurred, are part of very important weather data archives!
- In case you missed it, NOAA has issued their spring 2025 outlook for the USA. Temperature, precipitation, and drought conditions that will affect ALL Americans are addressed.
- With the increase in severe weather and tornado activity across much of the USA, remember to check your NOAA weather radio’s operation and its batteries. NOAA has a comprehensive page on NOAA weather radio…a feature of the National weather Service in the USA that has saved countless lives.

- Here’s the latest update on the US Drought Monitor. Across much of the contiguous USA, drought conditions have persisted during the past week. Most regions west of the Mississippi River have seen little relief as well as the eastern coastal regions. Extreme to exceptional drought conditions continue to worsen from Texas west to Nevada and California. The latest fire weather outlooks can be found at the Storm Prediction Center website where they are updated daily.
